Silver Jubilee, May 6th 1935

The people of Southwold and Halesworth pulled out all the stops with bunting, banners and bands to celebrate their King George V's 25 years on the throne.

These are scenes that were no doubt echoed throughout the land as the people of 2 East Suffolk towns joined forces to stage sports and celebrations to mark their popular King's Silver Jubilee. With the streets of Southwold decked with bunting and the giant bonfire ready to light up the night sky, local GP and amateur cameraman, Dr Aylen, captured the buzz of excitement and anticipation of events that lay ahead in the coastal town and, 10 miles inland near his home in Halesworth.

The event was marked by the planting of a Jubilee Tree followed by a service in the Town Square, Royal Salute, marching bands and the hoisting of the Union Jack. The medic was on hand to record the delighted and exctited crowds as they lined the streets before heading to the playing field for the children's sports and the fancy dress parade. Then busy Dr was back in Southwold as darkness fell to film the roaring bonfire on the Common and as, his captions say, "an end to a perfect day"
